In Advance Design the coupling beams are modeled as planar elements. The type of the planar element used is shell.

In the following example, we will determine the efforts within the coupling beam between two simple, linear walls. The system is subjected to vertical and lateral loads.

How is a coupling beam modeled

Start by modeling a wall without openings. Closed contours are created with lines, which will be used for the creation of openings. To create openings select the contours and use the "Create openings" command on the "CAD Modifications" toolbar.

To obtain a separate element for the beam follow these steps:

1. Select the planar element that was cut.
2. Select the "Create lintels" option from the "Modify/CAD" menu.
3. The elements are separated as individual entities.

To display the results for the planar elements used for the modeling of the coupling beam, on the Analysis - F.E. Results toolbar, choose "Torsors" from the first drop-down list. The efforts needed for the coupling beam are: moments at ends - "Mz (left/right)" and shear force - "Txy (left/right)".
