Starting with version 2012 of ADVANCE Design, all CAD functions have been optimized due to the OpenGL technology. This update allows a speed increase and less use of memory.

The OpenGL (Open Graphics Library) engine is used by the CAD platform and, through its interface it calls over 250 functions which are used for drawing 2D and 3D objects.

OpenGL 3.0 technology used by ADVANCE Design is compliant with various dedicated graphics cards which are listed on the official webpage www.opengl.org: Radeon HD series; GeForce 8, 9, 100-series, 200-series, 300-series, 400-series, 500-series and 600-series; Intel Sandy Bridge HD Graphics 2000 and 3000.

These kinds of graphic cards can be found on several computers including portable computers such as notebooks.

Most of the latest notebook models have a hybrid graphic cards system: a dedicated graphic card and another one which is integrated on the motherboard. This new technology brings substantial energy saving and high autonomy.

Due to this hybrid system, when office software is in use the IGP (Integrated Graphic Processor) will be active with less power consumption. For software with high graphical requirements (e.g., CAD software), the dedicated graphic card (GPU – Graphic Processing Unit) will be used.

Due to some limitations of the OpenGL functions of the integrated graphic cards, it is highly recommended to use GRAITEC Advance Suite with the dedicated graphic card support.

If there is no automatic switch technology between graphic cards (according with the graphical usage of the notebook) such as Nvidia Optimus, then it is recommended to manually select the graphic card – IGP or GPU.

1. In case of notebooks having a hybrid graphic video, for an optimal CAD functions use in ADVANCE Design, it is highly recommended to use the dedicated graphic card (GPU).

2. In case of notebooks having only a dedicated graphic card, it is recommended to install Service Pack 3 for ADVANCE Design 2012

3. The latest driver for the graphic card (IGP or/and GPU) must be installed; the update must be made according with the official webpage of the graphic card fabricator.

Notes:

How is the manual selection of the dedicated graphic card – GPU – used together with ADVANCE Design CAD functions?

⇒ In the Nvidia Control Panel go to the "Manage 3D Settings" window.
⇒ On the "Program Settings" tab select the path of the program file for which this setting must be applied: C:\Program Files\Graitec\Advance Design\2012\Bin\advancedesign.exe
⇒ Choose "Nvidia processor" and validate this setting.

Which settings should be made for the graphical video card for an optimal use of the CAD functions in ADVANCE Design?
